All-Star Game: 1971-1990

1971 - The American League breaks the streak, 6-4, in the game held in Detroit. Oakland's Reggie Jackson crushes a home run in the game.

1972 - The All-Star Game is held in Atlanta and the National League wins 4-3 in 10 innings. The win marks the seventh win in seven extra-inning games for the NL.

1973 - The designated hitter rule goes into effect and the All-Star Game is held in Kansas City. The NL wins, 7-1, in  a game in which a record 54 players participate.

1974 - The National League wins again. The NL takes the game played in Pittsburgh, 7-2. It marks the 11th win for the NL in 12 All-Star games.

1975 - The All-Star Game is held in Milwaukee and the NL wins, 6-3.

1976 - In the game held in Philadelphia, the National League wins 7-1. Detroit rookie Mark Fidrych starts for AL and takes the loss. He does go on to win the AL Rookie of the Year honor, winning 19 games and compiling a 2.34 earned run average.

1977 - In the game held at Yankee Stadium, the NL wins again, 7-5.

1978 - The National League gets its seventh consecutive win, 7-3, in the game held in San Diego.

1979 - The National League wins again. This time, it's a 7-6 victory in the game played in Seattle.

1980 - The National League keeps winning. This time, it's 4-2 in Los Angeles. Ken Griffey Sr hits a two-run home run to help bring the NL back from a 2-0 deficit.

1981 - The NL wins its 10th straight All-Star Game, 5-4, in Cleveland.  Mike Schmidt hit a two-run home run in the 8th inning to seal the victory for the National League.

1982 - The National League wins its 11th straight in Montreal, 4-1. It is the first All-Star Game played outside the United States. Dave Concepcion hits a two-run home run for the NL.

1983 - The American League breaks the streak. In the game held at Comiskey Park, the AL beats the NL, 13-3. In the 50th Anniversary of the All-Star Game, the AL pounds out 7 runs in the third inning. Fred Lynn hits the first grand slam in All-Star history.

1984 - The National League wins 3-1 in the game held in San Francisco. Dwight Gooden, just 19, strikes out the side in his first inning of pitching in an All-Star Game. Montreal's Gary Carter becomes the first player since 1968 to win two All-Star MVP Awards. Dale Murphy adds a home run for the NL.

1985 - The National League takes a 17-game lead in the All-Star series with a 6-1 win in the game played at the Metrodome. In a sign of the NL dominance, the National League squads have won 21 of the past 23 All-Star contests. LaMarr Hoyt, former Cy Young winner, is named the MVP.

1986 - LA's Fernando Valenzuela strikes out five AL batters in a row to tie Carl Hubbell's 1934 mark. The AL, however,  wins the game, held in Houston, 5-2. Frank White and Lou Whitaker homered for the AL.

1987 - The game is held in Oakland and the National League wins 2-0 in 13 innings. Tim Raines is named MVP after his two-run triple in the 13th is the difference in the game.

1988 - The American League wins the game, held in Cincinnati, 2-1. Terry Steinbach earns MVP honors in his first All-Star game by homering in his first at-bat and driving in the winning run later in the game.

1989 - The American League wins again. This time, it's a 5-3 victory at Anaheim. It marks the first time since 1958 that the AL has won two games in a row.  Bo Jackson leads off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and earns MVP honors. Nolan Ryan, 42, pitches two innings and becomes the oldest player to win an All-Star Game.

1990 - The AL wins the All-Star Game, 2-0, at Wrigley Field. American League pitchers, led by Bob Welch, allowed just 2 hits to the National League squad.
