Died: July 16, 2002
Jim Warfield, the Cleveland Indians trainer for 26 years, died on July 16, 2002, at the age of 60. He suffered a brain hemorrhage a day earlier at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.
Warfield became Cleveland's trainer in 1969. His death came just a few hours before the Indians were to play the White Sox.
Cleveland considered calling off the game, but the players and others decided they should play the game in his honor. Warfield was honored with a moment of silence before the first pitch.
"It's hard to believe," said shortstop Omar Vizquel in a wire story. "He was always there for you, to comfort you. To not have him around is very strange."
The team wore a "JW" on their uniforms for the rest of the season.
