Jose Uribe, who spent the majority of his Major League career with the San Francisco Giants, died Dec. 8, 2006 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. According to police reports, he was killed in an automobile accident. He was 47.
Uribe, who made his debut with the Giants in 1984, spent 10 seasons in the major leagues. He hit .241 in 3,064 career at-bats with 19 homes, 219 RBI and 74 stolen bases.
He made his debut with St. Louis in 1984. He was traded by the Cardinals, along with David Green, Dave LaPoint and Gary Rajsich, to the Giants for Jack Clark in February 1985. He played for the Giants from 1985 to 1992 and signed and played with Houston in 1993.
In 1986, he played in 157 games and hit .223 with three home runs, 43 RBI and 22 stolen bases.
Following his career in baseball, Uribe had owned a hardware store in D.R. He had run unsuccessfully for mayor, according to wire reports.
