Toth was 27 years old when he deubuted with St. Louis on April 22, 1962. In September of that year, the Cardinals sent him to the Cubs for Harvey Branch.

In 1963, he pitched to a 5-9 record and 3.10 ERA in 130.2 innings for Chicago.

On June 15, 1964, the Cardinals got Toth back, along with Lou Brock and Jack Spring, in the infamous deal that sent Bobby Shantz, Ernie Broglio and Doug Clemens to the Cubs.
