At the time he died on April 3, 2002, Karl Swason was the oldest living former Major League Baseball player. 

After his career, Swanson and his wife owned a small grocery store in Rock Island, Ill., and he worked as a scout with Brooklyn and the Chicago Cubs.

Swanson played in 24 games over two seasons with the Chicago White Sox, collected 9 hits in 65 at-bats. He also played minor league baseball for nine seasons in Iowa and Illinois.

Ralph Erickson, who pitched with the Pirates in 1929 and 1930, became baseball's oldest living player until his death on June 27, 2002 at 100.
