Dernell Stenson, a promising young outfielder who made his debut with the Reds in 2003, was found dead in Chandler, Ariz. on Nov. 5, 2003. The 25-year-old had been shot and apparently run over.
He had made his debut with the Reds in 2003, playing in 37 games, and scoring the last run of the season for the team on a home run in the final game.
Stenson was in Arizona to play for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League. At the time of his death, Stenson was batting .394, the third-best average in the league.
He was picked in the third round of the 1996 draft by the Boston and had been in the Red Sox organization until spring when he was claimed off waivers by the Reds.
In 2003, he hit .306 with 14 home runs and 76 RBI for AA Chattanooga and .237 with 5 home runs for AAA Louisville before getting a callup to the Reds.
