He finished his career with a 43-40 record, with a 3.52 ERA in 786 innings pitched. He also collected 9 saves. In an interview, his wife, Sharon Stafford, said Bill considered playing for the Dodgers, but signed with the Yankees because "the Dodgers would not give Bill a pair of spikes. The Yankees did." During the 1961 season, Stafford finished with a 14-9 record with a 2.68 ERA in 195 innings pitched. He was the winning pitcher in the last game of the season when Roger Maris hit his 61st home run. In 1962, he finished with a 14-9 record and a 3.67 ERA in 213.1 innings pitched. Stafford injured his arm in his first start in 1963 and was bothered by the injury for the rest of his career. |
