Jim Spencer was a first-round pick of the California Angels in 1965. He played for the Angels, Rangers, White Sox, Athletics and Yankees during his career.

He is a two-time Gold Glove winner and was a member of the 1973 All-Star team.

Jim Spencer, a veteran of 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, died Feb. 10, 2002 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Spencer was a member of the New York Yankees team that won the World Series in 1978. He was a member of the 1973 All-Star team and he won the Gold Glove twice. 

Spencer was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Maryland. The California Angels picked him in the first round of the draft in 1965 and he played for California, Texas, Chicago, New York and Oakland in his career. 

In his career, he hit .250 with 146 HRs and 599 RBI. He played for the Yankees when the team won the World Series in 1978. He collected two hits in 12 at-bats in the series.

Following his playing career, Spencer was a major league scout and college assistant coach. He also worked for the Yankees, making appearances at benefits.
