American League umpire diesFrom wire reports Hank Soar, a football star with the New York Giants and a Major League Umpire, died Dec. 24, 2001 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Soar served as an American League umpire from 1950 to 1975 and worked in five World Series and three All-Star Games.. At the time of his retirement, he was the league supervisor of officials. His World Series career including working first base when the Yankees' Don Larsen pitched a perfect game in 1956 to pick up the win against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Soar played football at Providence College from 1934 to 1935. He played for the Boston Shamrocks of the American Football League in 1936 and joined the New York Yankees in 1937. He played for the Giants until 1946. |
