Riverboat Smith, who debuted with Boston in 1958, died on June 23, 2003, in Clarence, MO, as the result of a tractor accident. He was 76.
Smith, who pitched 96.2 innings in the major leagues, finished with a 4-4 career record. His most productive season came in 1958 with Boston when he was 4-3 with a 3.78 ERA.
In 1958, he pitched .2 innings for the Cubs and 29.1 innings for the Indians.
He graduated from Clarence High School in 1945 and played baseball for three years at the University of Missouri. He played professional baseball for 13 years, primarily in the Boston Red Sox organization.
Following his career, he owned and operated Bob Smith Feed Lot Systems in Clarence from 1969-1999 and was involved in farming in Clarence since 1953. He worked with the baseball program in Clarence and was involved in the building of the baseball fields at Clarence City Lake in the 1960s, according his obituary.
He was survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Kelly, who he married in
1949, and three sons.
