Red Smith, born in Greenville, South Carolina, drove in more than 500 runs in his 10-year major league career. Playing mostly as a third baseman, Smith did play a few games in the outfield.

Smith made his debut with Brooklyn  in 1911. In 1913, he finished the year with 6 home runs, 76 runs batted in and 22 stolen bases while batting .296. In 1914, he spent time with both Brooklyn and Boston and had his best offensive year, hitting 7 home runs and driving in 85 runs between the two clubs.

In his career, Smith also stole 117 bases. In 1913, he led the league with 40 doubles and was second in the league in 1917 with 31.
