Clay Smith's life and career spanned a wide array of interests and his brief stop with the Tigers in 1940 led to him pitching in the World Series.

His first appearance in the Major Leagues came in 1938 as a member of the Cleveland Indians. He appeared in 4 games that season and pitched a total of 11 innings. In 1940, he reappeared with the Tigers, finished with a 1-1 record in 14 games.
