Two trades he was part of included league MVPs. Prior to the 1966 season, he was sent to the Cardinals as part of deal to get MVP Ken Boyer. In 1965, he was traded to the New York Yankees as part of a deal to get two-time MVP Roger Maris. Primarily used at third base, Smith also played some at second base, shortstop and in the outfield. The two most productive years of his career came in 1964 and 1965 with the New York Mets. In those two seasons, he hit a total of 36 home runs and 120 runs batted in. |
