Former White Sox outfielder Al Smith died on Jan. 3, 2002 at the age of 73. In his career, Smith hit .272 with 167 HR and 676 RBIs.
Smith, a two-time All Star, lived in Chicago and worked part-time with the Red Sox. He was born in Kirkwood, Mo. and was a member of the White Sox from 1958-62. He also appeared with the Cleveland Indians, the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox.
In the fifth inning of Game 2 of the 1959 World Series, Smith received a beer bath from a fan while Smith was trying to catch a home run ball hit by the Dodgers' Charley Neal.
He also played in the 1954 World Series against the New York Giants where he led off the series with a home run. In his career, he collected 8 hits in World Series play, including a home run.
