Dick Selma, who pitched for parts of 10 seasons in the major leagues, died on August 29, 2001.
In his second start in the major leagues, Selma, a pitcher for the Mets, defeated the Braves, 1-0, and recorded 13 strikeouts -- at that time, a record for a Mets' pitcher.
Selma was the winning pitcher in the Padres' first win of their inaugural season in 1969. However, he was traded later in the season to the Chicago Cubs where he became popular with Cubs fans for leading cheers in the bullpen.
He started 7-1 for the Cubs after the trade, but finished the season 10-8. He was traded, along with Oscar Gamble to the Philadelphia Phillies for Johnny Callison.
In 1970, Selma finished with 22 saves for the Phillies.
