Jack Sanford, the National League Rookie of the Year in 1957, died on March 7, 2000.

After spending several seasons in the minor leagues, Sanford spent 1955 and part of 1956 in the military. He made a brief debut with with Philadelphia in 1956. Then, he put together a 19-8 effort in 1957 with a 3.08 ERA and a league-leading 188 strikeouts in 236.7 innings. The performance earned Rookie of the Year honors.

He finished 10-13 in 1958 and was traded to the Giants in 1959. He won 15 games in 1959, 12 in 1960 and 13 in 1961. In spring training in 1962, the Giants started forcing Sanford to throw a curve and a slider to complement his fastball. The pitching strategy worked and Sanford won 24 games in 1962, posting a 3.43 ERA and striking out 147. He followed it up with a 16-13 season in 1963.

In 1964, he injured his shoulder and finished with a 5-7 record. In 1965, he had surgery and was sold to California. Sanford rebounded in 1966 with a 13-7 record for California.

He pitched just over 70 innings in 1967 between California and Kansas City. At the end for the season, he retired.

After his career as a player, he worked as a golf pro and later as a scout with the Baltimore Orioles.
