Freddy Sale caught the attention of major league scouts while he was pitching for the University of Georgia in the early 1920s. However, many reported his lack of stature -- just 5 feet, 9 inches tall -- as a reason he didn't rank higher in their evaluations.
Sale, referred to as a "diminutive right hander" in a Chicago Daily Tribune article, pitched a perfect game on May 1, 1923, in a game against Virginia. Georgia won the game, 4-0.
On April 26, 1924, he was the winning pitcher as Georgia beat Harvard, 5-3. According to game reports, Sale did not surrender a run until the ninth inning. Earlier in the season, he had recorded a 6-2 victory over Dartmouth.
He pitched in a single game in the major leagues on June 30, 1924 for the Pirates. In pitched a scoreless inning in a loss to the Cardinals and gave up two hits.
He died on May 27, 1956 in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
