>> Visit the Red Ruffing biography on Baseball Almanac for complete statistics. Red Ruffing's career could have been the subject of a classic work of literature. It's a Tale of Two Cities and, in this case, it's Boston and New York. One might not have guessed Ruffing was headed to Cooperstown after a 39-96 start with the Red Sox.
After an 0-3 start in 1930, Ruffing was traded to the New York Yankees and his career began to take off. He went 15-5 over the rest of the season. From 1931 to 1946, Ruffing had just one losing season. He was a member of 7 pennant-winning teams and he was the winner in 7 World Series games. Ruffing's path to baseball began as an outfielder, but he switched to pitching after he lost 4 toes on his left foot in a mine accident. Over his career, he hit .269 with 36 home runs and 273 RBIs. He had 5 seasons in which he drove in at least 20 runs. He did play three games in the outfield over the course of his career. From 1936 to 1939, he won at least 20 games each season. His 21 victories in 1938 was the high mark for the American League. He was a member of 5 All-Star teams and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1967. |
