Hank Riebe made his debut in baseball in 1942 with a 4-for-4 performance for the Detroit Tigers. The promise that he showed his first season when he appeared in 11 games and hit .314 was quickly brushed aside as Riebe joined the war effort.
As a member of the infantry, he fought at Leopoldville and was injured in France. He received a Purple Heart, but he was physically never the same after that incident.
He returned to baseball in 1947 with the Tigers and played for parts of three seasons. In 1948, he collected 12 hits in 62 at-bats, both career highs, and drove in 5 runs.
