Pokey Reese, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, emerged at second base for the Reds during the 1997 season and has held the position ever since. Reese brings a mix of average power, better-than-average speed and strong defensive skills to the middle infield of the Reds. In 1999, he finished fifth in the National League with 28 stolen bases. That year, he won his first Golden Glove for his play at second base. In 2000, Reese hit .255 with a career-high 12 home runs. He also stole 29 bases and was caught only three times.
