Jim Ray, born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, was a pitcher in major league baseball for 9 seasons and finished with a 43-30 record as a relief pitcher. Ray earned a reputation during his career for a sharp-breaking curveball and a hard fastball.
Ray made his debut in 1965 with the Astros for a total of 7.2 innings pitched. In 1966, Ray made an appearance in one game, is credited with no innings pitched and a walk. His fortunes changed in 1968 with he pitched in 80.2 innings and finished with a 2-3 record, one save and a 2.68 earned run average.
During the 1968 season, Ray pitched in a game between the Mets and Astros that lasted 24 innings and ended with a 1-0 record. During that game, Ray pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out 11.
