Richard Dennis Powell Died: Feb. 3, 2004 in Glenwood, Md. Richard Dennis Powell, a general manager with Baltimore of the Negro Leagues, died on Feb. 3, 2003 in Glenwood, Md., following a bout with cancer. He was 92. He was the business and general manager for the Baltimore Elite Giants -- a team that produced major leaguers Roy Campanella and Joe Black. According to wire reports, Powell is thought to have been one of the last living executives from the Negro League teams. According to his obituary, Powell is said to have convinced the team owners to move the team from Washington to Baltimore in 1938. Source: Associated Press |
