Dick O'Connell, a former Boston Red Sox general manager, died on Aug. 18, 2002, at the age of 87.
O'Connell started working for the Red Sox in 1949 and worked his way up in the organization, becoming executive vice president and general manager on Sept. 16, 1965.
He helped to build the Red Sox teams that would become contenders for the AL Championship, appearing in the 1967 and 1975 World Series. The Red Sox won at least 83 games each year from 1967-77 including 3 seasons with 90 or more wins. In five of those years, the Red Sox led the AL in attendance.
He is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
