Scott Mullen, a graduate of Beaufort High School in South Carolina, made his debut with the Kansas City Royals on August 31, 2000.

Mullen posted a 3-2 mark and 7 saves with a 3.19 ERA in 33 contests with Wichita at the beginning of the 2000 season. He moved up to Omaha and logged a 2-1 mark and a 3.05 ERA in 16 games.

The Kansas City Royals purchased his contract on August 30, 2000 and he made his Major League debut on August 31 at Tampa Bay. In that game, Mullen retired the only batter he faced to finish a 2-1 loss. He yielded just 1 earned run over his first 10 outings with the Royals for a 0.96 ERA (9.1 innings pitched). However, he gave up four earned runs in final appearance and his ERA blossomed to 4.35 ERA.

Mullen's first year of college was spent at The Citadel during the time that Shannon Faulkner was becoming the school's first female cadet. Later, Mullen attended Dallas Baptist University.
