Hugh Mulcahy earned the nickname "Losing Pitcher" when, in four consecutive seasons, he compiled a record of 40-76, leading the league in losses in 1938 with 20 and 1940 with 22.
Overall, he compiled a 45-89 record in 9 seasons in Major League Baseball. As a hitter, Mulcahy compiled a lifetime batting average of .165 with 21 RBIs.
His career was put on hold from 1941-45 for military service. Mulcahy was the first major league player to be drafted into service.
His career includes an All-Star Game appearance in 1940. That season, he pitched 280 innings for the Phillies, finishing with a 3.60 ERA and a 13-22 record.
