Bid McPhee, inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2000, spent 18 seasons in baseball from 1882 to 1899 in the American Association and the National League. He is considered by many to be the greatest second baseman of the 19th Century.

McPhee played as an infielder without a glove for 14 seasons before he reluctantly agreed to use one. He often led the league in double plays, fielding average, assists and putouts. In his 18 year career, he scored more than 100 runs in a season 10 times.

In 1887, he was credited with 95 stolen bases, placing him fifth overall in the league. In 1886, his 8 home runs led the league.

He managed Cincinnati in 1901 and 1902, compiling a 79-124 record..
