Tom Martin, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, made his debut as a pitcher with the Houston Astros in 1997. In 56 innings in 55 games, Martin finished with a 5-3 record, 2 saves and a 2.09 earned run average.

In 1998, he was pitching for Cleveland. In 14 games, he finished with a 12.89 earned run average. The next season, he finished with an 8.68 earned run average in 9.1 innings pitched. In 2000, Martin finished with a 4.05 earned run average in 33.1 innings pitched. 

In the 1997 National League Division Series, Martin pitched .2 innings in 2 games against the Atlanta Braves, allowing one hit, one walk and no earned runs.
