Barney Martin's major league career came in a single game on April 23, 1953. He pitched just two innings that game and just a few days later he was returned to the minor leagues.

Martin had attracted some attention after his outstanding season in 1952 with Columbia of the South Atlantic League. Martin led the league with 23 games and 174 strikeouts.

He pitched for the Cincinnati Redlegs in Spring Training in 1953. His moments on the mound included taking a loss to the Yankees on March 22, getting beaten by the Senators on April 5 in Columbia, S.C. and giving up eight hits in three innings to the Tigers in Richmond, Ind.

On April 22, 1953, he was called to the mound in Cincinnati's 8-3 loss to the Cardinals. In two innings, he allowed two earned runs and two hits. He walked a batter and struck out another.

Five days later, Cincinnati sent Martin back to Columbia of the South Atlantic League and he never reappeared in the major leagues.

His son, Jerry, spent 11 seasons in Major League Baseball.
