Hal Marnie appeared in 96 games with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1940-1942 as a utility infielder. He died on Jan. 7, 2002 in Philadelphia.

He drove in 15 runs and hit .221 in his career, gathering 49 hits in 222 at-bats.

In a game on May 18, 1941, the Phillies lost 6-5 to the Cardinals, but St. Louis lost rookie catcher Walker Cooper when his shoulder is injured as he was run over by Marnie at the plate. Marnie scored a run.

Following baseball's break after the tragic events of Sept. 11, a Philadelphia columnist asked Marnie about what it was like to be playing baseball at a time others were away fighting World War II.

"We were trying to win, but you always thought about the guys not there and that we were at war," Marnie said in a column appearing at www.phillyburbs.com.  "I don't think we had our heart and soul into it. That was a long time ago, but guys today might feel the same way."
