Jim Mallory's major league career lasted for 54 games. Four of those came with the Washington Senators in 1940, the last 50 came in 1945 with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. In between, Mallory was a member of the Armed Forces.
His career totals are 40 hits, 15 RBI and a stolen base in 149 at-bats.
Mallory was a head baseball coach at East Carolina from 1954 to 1962. In 1961, the East Carolina team won the NAIA Championship, defeating Grambling State, Omaha University and Sacramento State.
He returned to coach the team in 1973, finishing with a 16-8 record. His overall coaching record at East Carolina was 161-60 -- a winning percentage of .729.
Mallory was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He played baseball and football for the Tar Heels.
"He was a good athlete," said Earl Boykin, a player on East Carolina's 1961 team, as reported in an article on Bonesville.net. "He'd get out there and take batting practice. He probably hit better than anybody on the team."
His coaching career included stops at Catawba College, Burlington High School and Elon. He is a member of the sports Halls of Fame at Elon and East Carolina.
He retired from ECU in 1985.
