Rufino Linares, an outfielder who played in 207 major league games, died on May 16, 1998 in an automobile accident in Santo Domingo, D.R. He was 47.

He played for the Atlanta Braves in 1981, 1982 and 1984 and for California in 1985. In 207 major league games, he hit .270 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI.

Prior to his death, he had worked as a coach for the Toyo Carp team in Hiroshima, Japan.
