John Irvin Kennedy's Major League career lasted just five games, but the Negro League player became the first black athlete to play for the Phillies.

On April 22, 1957, Kennedy stepped on the field for Philadelphia, the last team in the National League to integrate. The day before the first games of the 1957 season, the Phillies traded for Brooklyn Dodgers shortstop Chico Fernandez. The move left Kennedy without a position.
