Pat Kelly, a speedy outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the major leagues, died on Oct. 2, 2005 from an apparent heart attack. He was 61.
He hit .264 with 76 home runs, 418 RBI and 250 stolen bases. His career included stops in Minnesota (1967-1968), Kansas City (1969-1970), Chicago AL (1971-1976), Baltimore (1977-1980) and Cleveland (1981).
Kelly made his debut in the major leagues in 1967 with Minnesota. In oct. 1968, he was selected by the Royals in the expansion draft. He became a full-time player in 1969 with the Kansas City. In his first full season, he hit .264 with eight home runs, 32 RBI and 40 stolen bases.
In Oct. 1970, the Royals traded Kelly, along with Don O'Riley, to the White Sox for Gail Hopkins and John Matias. He made his only All-Star team appearance in 1973. In Nov. 1976, the White Sox traded him to Baltimore for Dave Duncan.
In 1979, while playing for Baltimore, he hit a home run in the ALCS against California. That home run came in the seventh inning of Game Four and it propelled Baltimore to the World Series. He had one at-bat in the World Series loss to the Pirates.
His brother, Leroy, was a running back for the Cleveland Browns and is inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Following his retirement from baseball, Pat Kelly worked with Lifeline Ministries.
