Born in St. Louis, Bob Keely wanted to play baseball at an early age, but was convinced by his father to find another career in the event baseball didn't work out. He opted to become a plasterer before trying out with the Cardinals.

After 2 1/2 years in the Cardinals' farm system, he returned to St. Louis to continue his work as a plasterer. With the onset of World War II, he earned another shot in baseball as players left to join the military.

He was signed as the Cardinals' third-string catcher and played during the 1944 and 1945 seasons.

From 1946 to 1958, he was the bullpen coach for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves. In 1960, he moved to Bradenton, Fla, and worked as a scout for the Cardinals in the 1960s and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s.
