In 1954, he set a Dodgers record with 24 saves. His mark was tied in 1970 by Jim Brewer and wasn't broken until 1989 by Jay Howell. In that season, Hughes led the National League with appearances after he pitched in 60 games. Hughes finished his career with a 15-13 record and 39 saves in 296 innings pitched. He had a career ERA of 3.83. Hughes also played for the Cubs in 1956 and the White Sox in 1957. He died in 2001 after a heart attack. |
