Bill Howerton, who hit 22 home runs in four seasons in the major leagues, died on Dec. 18, 2001 in Blakely, Penn.

In 650 at-bats, he hit 22 home runs and drove in 106 runs. He made his debut with the Cardinals in 1949 and, in his rookie season, in 1950, he hit .281 in 313 at-bats with 10 home runs and 59 RBI.

In June 1951, the Cardinals traded Howerton, along with Dick Cole, Joe Garagiola, Howie Pollet and Ted Wilks to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Cliff Chambers and Wally Westlake.
