Gomer Hodge, who played for the Cleveland Indians in 1971, died May 13, 2007 in Saluda, N.C., following a battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 63.

He hit .205 in 83 at-bats in the major leagues. His totals include 17 hits, a home run and nine RBI.

According to his obituary, his nickname came from his resemblance to the famed character from "Gomer Pyle, USMC." His Southern accent also helped with the nickname.
