George Gill, a pitcher who was 11-4 in his rookie season, died on Feb. 21, 1999 in Jackson, Miss.
Gill finished his major league career with 24-26 record and a 5.05 ERA in 395.1 innings. He made his debut with the Tigers in 1937, finishing 11-4, and following up with a 12-9 year in 1938.
On May 13, 1939, he was part of a nine-player deal between the Tigers and the Browns that brought Bobo Newsom to the Tigers. Gill finished the season with a 1-12 record for the Browns and did not pitch at the major league level again after the 1937 season.
