Ed Freed, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1942, died on Nov. 11,  2002, at the age of 83.

He entered baseball with a splash, collecting four hits in his first game  (against the Reds) and joining Willie McCovey and Casey Stengel as the only players to debut with 4 hits.  In the game, Freed went 4 for 5 with a  single, two doubles and a triple off the Reds' Johnny Vander Meer.

Freed was born in Centre Valley, Penn., and played high school baseball in  Allentown, Penn., In 1940, received a tryout with the Trenton Senators, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

From 1947-49, he played for the Rock Hill Chiefs. In 1947,  he hit .324 with 4 home runs and 97 RBIs and was the team's player-manager near the end of  the season.  He also played in the minors for the Charlotte Hornets baseball  team.

He retired from baseball in 1950.

After baseball, he lived in Rock Hill, S.C., working for Rock Hill Printing  and Finishing Co. as an industrial engineer. He was inducted into the York County, SC, Hall of Fame in 2001.
