Jim Fairey earned a reputation in the minor leagues for his strong arm and defensive ability. However, the left-hander earned another reputation when he hit a pinch-hit home run for the Dodgers in 1968. After that, he was used primarily in a pinch-hit role.
Fairey ended his career with a .254 average as a pinch hitter. In 1972, he led the National League with 55 pinch-hit appearances.
Fairey is one of three major league players to have played at Erskine College. The other two are Erskine Thomason and Eric Moody.
Fairey played a role in Moody's pitching career. After Moody was drafted by the Texas Rangers, Fairey is the person who worked out the deal.
