Mario Encarnacion was found dead in his dormitory in Taiwan on Oct. 3, 2005. He was playing for the Macoto Cobras of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. He was 30.
No official cause of death has been announced.
Encarnacion did not appear when the team gathered in front of the dormitory before training. Team officials checked his room and found him dead, according to wire reports.
He had played for the Macoto Cobras since April and he had hit 17 home runs during the season.
He made his debut in the major leagues on Aug. 26, 2001 with the Colorado Rockies. He had 14 hits in 62 at-bats that season with three RBI and two stolen bases. He had started the 2001 season with Oakland, but had been part of the deal that sent Jermaine Dye to the A's and Todd Belitz and Jose Ortiz to the Rockies.
He was hitless in seven at-bats with the Cubs in 2002.
