Harry Dorish, one of the first relief pitchers to specialize in closing games, died on Dec. 31, 2000, at the age of 79.
Dorish pitched 835 innings in a 10-year career. He finished with a 45-43 record, 44 saves and a 3.83 ERA. He led the American Leauge in saves in 1952 with 11 saves.
In 1953, he was 10-6 with 18 saves -- second in the AL -- and a 3.39 ERA. He was also the last American League pitcher to record a steal of home.
Dorish debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1947 at the age of 25. His career included: Boston AL (1947-49), St. Louis Browns (1950), Chicago White Sox (1951-55), Baltimore (1955-56), Boston Red Sox (1956).
Dorish' minor league career included C and AAA team with the Red Sox and the Louisville Colonels.
Following his career as a player, he was a coach for the Red Sox, Braves and Reds and a scout for the Pirates and Indians.
He served in the Army during World War II.
