Al Cowens, an outfielder with the Kansas City Royals, California Angels, Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, died on March 11, 2002.
His best year came in 1977 when he captured a Gold Glove and finished as the runner-up in American League MVP voting to Rod Carew. That season, Cowens hit .312 with 23 home runs and 112 RBIs.
After playing briefly for the Angels and two seasons with the Tigers, he joined the Seattle Mariners in 1982 and finished his career there in 1986.
In 13 seasons, Cowens hit .270 with 107 home runs and 717 RBIs. In 14 postseason games, Cowens hit .200 with a triple, a home run, 6 RBI and 2 stolen bases.
Following his retirement, he worked as a scout with the Royals.
