Tommy Brewer caught the attention of Elon College for his play as an infielder in high school.
His college coach, however, had different plans for Brewer in baseball and they called for pitching.
In 1950, Brewer played for Elon and made the conversion to a pitcher. The next year, he was drafted into the Army when the Korean War broke out. Brewer was stationed at the Army base in Attenbury, Indiana.
He earned honors in 1952 when he was named to the All-Army team for his pitching at Attenbury. When he was discharged from the service, he quickly caught the attention of the Red Sox and signed a contract.
The Sox sent him to Class D Highpoint in 1953. Brewer won 23 games and caught the attention of the big league team. The next season, he joined the Red Sox.
His best season with the Red Sox came in 1956 when he finished with a 19-9 record and a 3.50 earned run average. He also appeared in the All-Star game that season.
