Rex Bowen, the baseball scout who signed Bill Mazeroski, Maury Wills and Dick Groat, died on Dec. 30, 2004 in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He was 93.
Bowen had served as an executive for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds.
According to his obituary, Bowen went to work for the Pirates in 1950 as a scout and he became the director of scouting in 1959.
He later worked as a special assistant to the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds from 1968 to 1990.
According to wire reports, Bowen was selected as one of the top 10 scouts of the century in 2000 by Baseball America.
Bowen's other signings included Roger Craig, Gene Freese and Gene Michael.
Bowen's grandson, Jackie Bowen, is the scouting director for the New York Mets.
