Jimmy Bloodworth, an infielder on the famed 1950 Philadelphia Phillies "Whiz Kids", died August 17, 2002 in Florida at the age of 85. Bloodworth spent 11 years in major league baseball, playing for the Washington Senators, the Detroit Tigers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Cincinnati Reds. He made his debut in 1937 when he played in 15 games for the Senators. He was only 19 years old. He returned in 1939 to play in 83 games for Washington, batting .289 and and driving in 40 runs. The next year, 1940, he played in 119 games he in he hit .245 with eleven home runs and 70 runs batted in, a career high. He played for Detroit from 1942 to 1943 and in 1946. He missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons while he was serving in the military during World War II. In 1947, he played for Pittsburgh, in 1949 and 1950 he played for Cincinnati, and he was a part of Phillies in 1950 and 1951. In his career, he hit .248 with 62 home runs and 451 runs batted in. During the early 1940s, he led the American League in fielding for second baseman three times. In 1950, he played in one game in the World Series.
