Emil Belich, a former Brewers' scout who signed Paul Molitor and Jim Gantner, died on Sept. 3, 2003 from prostrate cancer. He was 83.
"He had wonderful judgment, marvelous judgment," said Bud Selig, MLB commissioner and former president of the Brewers, in an interview with the Associated Press. "He was one of the savviest scouts I knew, frankly."
Belich joined the Brewers in 1953 as a scout and batting practice pitcher. In the early 1960s, he was a scout for Philadelphia and was hired against by the Brewers in 1971. Molitor and Gantner, two of his key signings, were part of the Brewers' pennant-winning team in 1982.
In the mid-1980s, he worked for major league baseball's scouting bureau before he returned to the Phillies in 1991.
