Toby Atwell Maurice Dailey Atwell
>> Visit the Toby Atwell biography on Baseball Almanac for complete statistics. Toby Atwell, a catcher who played for the Cubs, Pirates and Braves, died on January 25, 2003 in Purceville, Va. He was 78. He debuted with Chicago in 1952 and hit .290 in 107 games. His rookie season marked career highs in average, at-bats, RBIs and hits. In 1953, Chicago traded Atwell, Bob Schultz, Preston Ward, Geroge Freese, Bob Addis, Gene Hermanski and cash to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Ralph Kiner, Joe Garagiola, Howie Pollt and Catfish Metkovich. In 1954, he hit three home runs for the Pirates -- with two of those coming in the same game. On April 27, Atwell and teammate Jerry Lynch hit back-to-back home runs in both the 6th and 8th innings. He last appeared in the major leagues with Milwaukee in 1956. |
